You Won't Be Burning These

After you have made your decision to breastfeed, the first and most important item to obtain for your breastfeeding wardrobe is the nursing bra. And, contrary to its name, these bras are no longer maternal and boring. You can find nursing bras for virtually every occasion and preference.

Nursing bras

Look good, feel good, and functional

The nursing bra comes in many incarnations. There is the sleep bra, the sports bra, the convertible/strapless bra, and the everyday-use bra. These can be lightly padded, made of satin or cotton/spandex blend. They come with or without underwire, with lace trim or with a mesh insert to add stretch and flair. You can find colored and patterned bras. And, if you look hard enough, you can find matching panties. Nursing bras are now made to look sexy, yet still be supportive. There is no need to sacrifice fashion for functionality. Very decent ones can be purchased for $10 to $20, while at higher-end shops, bras can be purchased for $55 to $75 and beyond.

There are some points to bear in mind when choosing the right nursing bra. Since they are designed with cups that open, choose one where the flaps can be easily opened with one hand. The bra should be supporting the breast from underneath even when the cup is open. The nursing bra should fit very comfortably. Bras that are too tight can possibly lead to plugged ducts or breast infections where straps or restrictive underwires block the milk flow. Try to avoid underwire bras, if possible, in the early postpartum weeks. The breast's milk-producing tissue extends all the way to the ribcage and into the underarm. Underwire might obstruct the milk ducts in this area. If you do choose underwire, be sure that the fit is not tight. Finally, make sure the cups are made of breathable fabric. This prevents moisture from collecting around the nipples and discourages bacterial growth. With all of these guidelines to bear in mind, it's a good thing that there are so many different bra styles and makers to choose from.
